To start, I like playing Holdem - it's a pleasurable time to me and it beats TV by a mile. I like to win, but winning a lot of money is secondary to having a good time playing.
When I first started playing Holdem several months ago, I was well read, but absolutely novice about the various games within the game -
There's limit, nolimit, sitandgo tournaments and regularly scheduled tournaments,
There's .5-1, 1-2, 2-3, 3-6 and so on for limit Holdem (and no limit antes),
There's 1,3,5 10, 20, 50 100, etc buy in for the tournaments,
Each type of game has its own particular strategy and each attract their own particular following.
Some games attract nearly all novice players and require a more loose aggressive style of play while other games attract more experienced players and require a more tight aggressive strategy.
The day of the week you play can determine the experience level of the oppositon - Monday having a more experienced level of player at the table thanSaturday.
After trying and losing at just about all of the types of games, I've settled on tournament play as my favorite.
You can play for hours for $1 to $100 and you can sometimes win as you learn the vagaries of the game.
A $10 tournament can attract 500 or 600 players and net a nice payout for the top 4 or 5 players - and the lower cost tournies tend not to attract the best players, so you have an opportunity to win if you play a good game and have a little luck on your side.
Oh, yes, and most importantly - you ain't gonna lose your shirt playing low entry fee tournies. If I stayed away from the $40 and $100 games, I'd have a winning bankroll.
Yup! I like Holdem and I like tournament play - all of the pleasures of the game with a possibly large payout and without suffering possibly huge losses that other play can bring.
